Dansm's Sea Kayaking Page
Tidal Current Calculator
Version 1.60 is now live!

Knowing what to expect from tidal currents is more important for the kayaker than for other boaters. In a kayak, one is at the mercy of water that might move faster than the kayaker can paddle. This Javascript Tidal Current Calculator allows you to very quickly calculate times and speeds of predicted currents for many locations around the country. Using the calculator will allow you to better predict the state of the sea and will ultimately improve your safety. Read on for instructions on using the Calculator.

DISCLAIMER
Not for navigation. I am not responsible for typographical errors or death/injury due to use of the Javascript Tidal Current Calculator. The user assumes all responsibility for ensuring that tidal current calculations are accurate, and for reading associated notes and information contained in the Tidal Current Tables. The Tidal Current Tables are available online, but the online version does not include some important information (like the latitude/longitude of prediction station locations or any rotary current predictions), so a hard copy should be purchased to supplement your research.

WHAT THIS CALCULATOR DOES NOT DO
- does not work with Macintosh running Internet Explorer (Netscape and OSX-Safari work on Mac; Netscape and IE work on PC).
- does not provide the exact location (latitude & longitude) of the subordinate station or the current speed at "slack water". This information is not available online; you need to purchase a hard copy of the Tidal Current Tables to obtain it.
- does not include locations experiencing rotary currents. This information is not available online; you need to purchase a hard copy of the Tidal Current Tables to obtain it.
- does not include any locations for which all four time corrections and both speed corrections are not provided in the correction factor table. In certain cases, the calculator includes locations with indefinite maximum current directions; in these cases the direction is indicated in the calculated table as "999."
- does not provide breakdowns by location in the calculated table; only individual subordinate station names are included.
- does not allow calculated data from multiple reference stations to be printed on the same page.

WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 1.60
- Interface has been modified so the user can examine all subordinate data before selecting stations, allowing the user to view the numerous notes provided throughout the table, identify locations where the current is known to be "weak and variable," and view station data even where all correction factors are not available.
- Database has been expanded to include all official NOAA subordinate stations on the United States coast.
- Users now initially select their desired location from a list of coastal regions (instead of reference stations), improving the user's ability to find and identify all relevant stations.
- Tidal current calculation display now arranges peak current times and speeds in adjacent, shaded columns, making the table easier to read.
